In 95% of all cases, the HDD is dying, (bearings slowing it down), and a conversion to an SSD (Solid State Drive: no bearings at all) will not only fix it but increase performance far beyond when it was new.

SSD conversion can be done for $180 on a laptop, or $220 on an iMac in labor, which also includes a good clean-out of the cooling system, data migration, and general diagnostics. An iMac also will need a $100 conversion kit (OWC thermal sensor, brackets, glue strips). The cost of the SSD depends on its storage capacity. The size of the SSD itself depends on how much data you want to store on it.
